Almost no one claims that pizza is an Italian food anymore. Especially since pizza as it is enjoyed in many parts of the world bears so little resemblance to the original. The United States has taken so well to pizza that it has several varieties named after US states and cities - the New York style, Chicago style, Saint Louis style, Hawaiian style and California style. Meanwhile, pizza is popular in other countries, including in Australia where it’s served for breakfast! Regardless of the origin, pizza has been taken over by the West and reinvented many times.

Pizza restaurants have become one of the most ubiquitous varieties of fast food restaurants, although the time required to bake a pizza is a little longer than what would normally qualify as “fast”. Many pizza restaurants make pizzas ahead of time with standard toppings and then keep them under heat lamps. Getting a pizza delivered has become the quintessential order-out lunch or dinner, and many college students are heard to say they might have starved without it.

Most of the chain pizza restaurants franchise, including Pizza Hut and Domino’s. Besides these two giants of the industry, other businesses which you might have heard of which are offering pizza franchises include Captain Tony’s Pizza, Extreme Pizza, Figaro’s Pizza, Jimano’s Pizzeria, Nick ‘n’ Willy’s Take ‘n’ Bake Pizza (who needs to franchise just to afford all those apostrophes), Pandini’s, Redbrick Pizza, and Stevie B’s. No doubt, your uncle has started his own pizzeria too - our apologies for not including him in the list.

You would think with all this competition, pizzerias who are desperate to win the numbers game would simply give franchises away for couch-cushion change. But no, the start-up costs typically run to the mid-five-figures and up to $300,000 or so. This is because a pizza restaurant needs a lot to keep it going - ovens to bake in, lots of storage, and a fleet of delivery vehicles. Of course, you need insurance for the drivers, too. Of course, many pizza restaurants offer financial assistance with their franchises.

Make no mistake, a pizza restaurant is a lot of work! It is a step above fast food, with the trappings of a full-scale restaurant. Many pizza restaurants have of course branched out into other kinds of food, so many of them offer salad bars, baked desserts, pasta, beverages, and anything else they can think of. Many pizza restaurants also offer a family-fun entertainment arcade as well. You don’t have to do all of this, but just be aware that if you don’t, the competition often will.

On the other hand, pizza restaurants make great money, being perhaps the most profitable variety of restaurant in the United States. Pizza restaurants have become a favorite place to take the kids, being one of the few evening activities which the whole clan can enjoy.

An interesting new development has been the ability to order pizza online - just pop in your credit card number and select your toppings from the menu, and a pizza magically gets delivered 30 minutes later. This is popular with the techie and college crowd, who prefer doing things over the Internet just for the “cool” factor. It’s something to consider offering - don’t be intimidated by the set-up. A modest LAMP server, some Javascript and Perl - you’re there! They make scripts that do this now, you know.
