Gym Franchise Opportunities

Low Maintenance Gym Franchise Business Options

So, you’re considering starting a franchised business, but you’re pondering what business to go into. You hate math, so accounting services aren’t for you. You don’t want to flip burgers all day so that leaves out fast food. You’re not the type to get your hands dirty, so janitorial services aren’t your cup of tea, either. Maybe what you want is something that’s low maintenance, and yet has a high profit potential.

Maybe your answer is a gym franchise! Gyms have a lot going for them:

* Low maintenance - once you get the equipment set up, your maintenance is pretty much reduced to basic house-cleaning work. No grease traps to dump or animals to clean up after.

* Steady income - gyms require a membership! So as opposed to other kinds of businesses where you never know where your next customer is coming from, gyms enjoy a steady stream of income throughout the year.

* High-grade clientele - since the economically lower class is seldom concerned about how they look, your customers are usually fairly well-to-do. This eliminates some of the problems you’d have in a business where any rabble off the street can come in and loiter.

* Great social atmosphere - part of the attraction of gyms is that they’re a great place for like-minded people to socialize. Gyms are rapidly becoming a social hub in suburban neighborhoods. And what better way for singles to meet an attractive partner than to find one in a place where people who care about how they look go?

Gym companies frequently offer a highly comprehensive support and training package. Since it is acknowledged that the equipment is the key factor in a gym, they provide both the equipment and the staff who will come out and set it up for you. The larger gyms offer not just a training program, but an actual class you can attend with other franchisees, with instructors to lead you through the material.

Some cautionary bits of advice: You should know as much about health and fitness as you can if you’re going to run a gym. By all means, being in good shape yourself and hiring staff who at least wouldn’t get thrown out of a nightclub helps. Gyms aren’t a recession-proof industry, but then they tend to attract the middle-to-upper class who isn’t too worried about money in the first place.

Finally, be aware that you will have to pay some attention to insurance and liability - gyms are vulnerable to accident claims. You don’t have to think long about the possibilities - dropping a weight on your foot, slipping and falling in the shower, falling on a treadmill, straining a tendon at yoga, or accidentally getting kicked by somebody jazzercising out of synch with the group - to see that liability will be a concern. The gym companies all take this into account, and offer assistance in all areas from training so that you avoid as many accidents as possible in the first place, to helping with insurance requirements and legal assistance should the worst case scenarios happen.

After all this is considered, about the only downside left is that gyms are slightly more costly to set up than the average franchised business. This is due in part to the real-estate space requirement - there’s no getting around needing the square footage to run a gym, since you can’t just expect people to do all that vigorous moving around without some elbow clearance and they certainly aren’t going to come out with a stackable rowing machine any time soon.

A gym franchise may be just for you - and don’t forget that a gym is actually a fun business to run!
